Living in the Moment

Last night, Lauren and I went for the fifth year in a row to see The Nutcracker .  It is put on by a local ballet company and since they change things from year to year, it's never the same.  I was remarking to her that next year hopefully we would be able to go together, but it's a possibly she might be spending Thanksgiving of 2014 with new friends from college.  Especially, since the furthest school she has been accepted to is over five hours away :)  I told her something like, "I have you now, so let's enjoy it." I spend time (more than I should) worrying about what the future holds. The realization that I have finally came to at the ripe old age of 50, is that when I do that, I kind of lose that precious time of  "living in the moment."  After multiple eye tests over the past few months, it's been pretty much determined that I have glaucoma.  That type of eye disease is a sneaky one, you basically don't know that you have it until you have l...

Time and Attention

Lauren was 8 when Dominic was born.  She was used to being the "princess" of our household.  I think me getting pregnant and then giving birth to Dominic kind of rocked her world.   The February before Dominic was born, I lost my 101-year old grandmother.  Then, shortly after the holidays of 2004, my father-in-law got ill and my hubby traveled back to Cleveland every weekend, except one, for three months.   After his dad passed, we traveled frequently to Cleveland to visit his mom and then moved her closer to us in 2006. To say Lauren didn't get enough attention during this time frame would be an understatement.   Dominic was very fussy, he rarely slept and between him crying, me nursing him and trying to support my husband with all that he had going on with his parents, it didn't leave a lot of time for Lauren.  I think back to those times and wished I could have spent more time with her.  Dominic required so much of me that Lau...

Time

I stopped wearing a watch a few years ago.  It seemed to either get scratched, lost or the battery would give out and it cost more to replace the battery than the watch was worth.  Each day always has 24 hours in it, but some days seem to drag, while others zip by.  That never ceases to amaze me.   If you ask any parent out there, no matter how many kids you have, you always wish you had more time to get everything done in those 24 hours.  I think back sometimes to one of my first jobs.  I basically had nothing to do and I literally would sit and watch the clock.  Those clock hands definitely don't move any faster if you're watching them!!!  Don't you sometimes wish you could stop the time? Especially when your kids take their first steps or say their first words? Time marches on whether you want it to or not.  One minute you're changing your kid's diapers, the next thing you know they are heading towards college!!  I have gotten used to...
